Brandon Schneider signed a new four-year contract with Kansas that will pay the Big 12 women's basketball coach of the year $400,000 annually
Lawrence, Cannes. (AP) — Brandon Schneider signed a new four-year contract with Kansas on Wednesday that will pay the Big 12 coach of the year $400,000 annually through the 2025-26 season along with a host of benefits and incentives .
Schneider moved up to fifth in the Big 12 this season after the Jayhawks (20-8) were voted last in the league's president poll. He won seven straight games at the start of this season, the program's longest streak since 1997, and 20 wins in the regular season was his most since the 1999–2000 season.
Kansas opened the Big 12 tournament against fourth-seeded Oklahoma on Friday in Kansas City, Missouri.
"Brandon has worked tirelessly to get the program back where it should be competing at the highest level of the Big 12 with the opportunity to make a statement in March," said Kansas Athletic Director Travis Goff. “Brandon has also assembled an excellent coaching staff who lead, guide and develop our young women on and off the court.
“While we love progress on the court, at the University of Kansas our emphasis is on the character of the head coach, the way they lead and develop our student-athletes, as well as how they represent our program day-to-day. Everyday. That's why we're so excited to sign Brandon to a new four-year contract."
Schneider, 50, who was earning $300,000 a year on his previous contract, is 81-123 and has never been better than ninth in the 10-team Big 12 over the past six seasons in Kansas. He also spent 12 years at nearby Emporia State, winning a Division II national title, and competing with Stephen F. Austin had three 20-over winning seasons in five years.
"It's been a process to get to the point where we are," Schneider said, "but making things right isn't always as quick as you'd like. We've tried to stay on course and stick to the values and pillars of our program." Tried to stay true to it, knowing that one day we would create something that would be very sustainable."
Schneider's new deal includes $40,000 each year for the use of his name, image and likeness. He would also earn $50,000 for winning the regular-season Big 12 title and $25,000 for conference tournaments; $100,000 for winning the AP Coach of the Year award; $50,000 to qualify for the NCAA tournament, $100,000 to advance to the Sweet 16, $150,000 to make the Final Four, and $200,000 to win the national championship.
Other benefits include the use of two courtesy cars, the ability to run summer camp, a sports trip away from home for Schneider's family, and four tickets to each football and men's basketball game.
"I am extremely grateful for the support and trust towards this program," Schneider said in a statement. "The increased support for women's basketball at the University of Kansas has been tremendous and has had a major impact on the success of the program."
