With no definitive quarterback prospect available at the top of this year's draft, the Detroit Lions are bringing back the pairings that set them a 3-13-1 record for 2022.
Tim Boyle on Monday agreed to a one-year deal worth up to $2.5 million ahead of an open agent negotiation period. The deal includes $500,000 in playtime incentives and a guaranteed $1.75 million.
Boyle made three starts last season in place of Jared Goff, completing 64.9% of his passes with three touchdowns and six interceptions. The Lions went 0-3 with Boyle at quarterback, but he did progressively better at each start and said he expected to stay in Detroit late in the season.
He said, "I've made a lot of special connections here. I love this area. The fans have been awesome to me. And, yes, I don't get paid to make those decisions, but hopefully I can myself." Will keep it in this position that they can consider me back as I would love to be back."
Goff, 27, will enter his second season as the Lions' starting quarterback at quarterback this fall. He struggled early last season following his trade to the Los Angeles Rams, when he was reluctant to throw the ball down, but in the second half of the season after the Lions removed offensive coordinator Anthony Lynn of play calling duties. showed significant improvement. ,
The Lions are targeting help with their passing game in free agency this week and hope to sign a receiver to pair with Amon-Ra St. Wednesday.
Last year, the Lions finished 25th in scoring offense and 24th in yards per pass game.
He can still be considered quarterback in April's 2022 NFL Draft, where he has three of the first 34 picks, but it is considered a down year in the position.
Pitt's Kenny Pickett, coming out of a 42-touchdown season, is the most pro-ready quarterback in the draft, while Liberty's Malik Willis has the highest bounce of any draft-eligible quarterback due to his rocket arm and mobility.
North Carolina's Sam Howell, Ole Miss' Matt Coral and Cincinnati's Desmond Ridder could also generate first-round interest in the position.
The Lions, who need a long-term solution at the quarterback, teamed up with Willis, Howell and Western Kentucky's Bailey Zappe in the Senior Bowl, a predictable mid-round pick.
The Lions have 11 remaining unrestricted free agents, including Tracy Walker and Charles Harris. He is not expected to tender third-rate quarterback David Blow before Wednesday for a restricted free agent contract that would leave him free to sign with either team.
