BMW is recalling more than 917,000 used cars and SUVs in the United States, most of which are being recalled for the third time, to address a fire fault in the engine compartment.
Several BMW 3 Series, 5 Series, 1 Series, X5, X3 and Z4 vehicles from the 2006 to 2013 model years are included in the recall.
An electrical short may have occurred in the positive crankcase ventilation valve heater, according to documents released Wednesday by the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
They have the potential to overheat and catch fire.
Vehicles are at risk of fire while driving or immediately after being parked.
Since fire is rare, BMW claims the vehicles can still be driven.
However, according to business instructions, if the driver smells smoke or sees smoke coming from the engine compartment, they should move to a safe location, turn off the engine and exit the car.
The German automaker is still working on a solution.
The owners will be notified by letter starting April 25, according to the statement.
Most of the vehicles were recalled due to the same issue in 2017 and 2019.
According to BMW papers, owners who had their vehicles repaired before will need to get them repaired again.
