Amalaki Ekadashi falls in the time between Maha Shivratri and Holi. It is also known as Falgun Shukla Ekadashi and is mostly celebrated between February and March. According to Hindu customs, Ekadashi is celebrated through Parana, which breaks the fast after sunrise on the next day of Ekadashi fast.
It is necessary to do the Parana within the tithi and it ends before sunrise. It is believed that Parana is not performed during Dwadashi. This is considered objectionable. The fast is performed on both the days and is recommended for staunch devotees who wish to seek the love and blessings of Lord Vishnu.

Even a devotee should avoid breaking the fast during Madhayana.
Sometimes Ekadashi fast is observed for two consecutive days.
Alternate Ekadashi is preferred for ascetics, widows and salvation seekers.
The fast can be performed by Smarta, with the family fasting on the very first day itself.
