The 49ers would need a team with lots of cap space to lose its starting quarterback to a freak injury in practice during training camp.
Free agency begins in two days, and the 49ers still haven't traded Jimmy Garoppolo or cleared the cap space required to sign impact players. And then this morning, we learned that the 49ers want two second-round picks for Garoppolo (Good Luck) and, if they don't get what they want, they can hold onto that until training camp and then can trade, according to The Athletic.
And if there's still a team unwilling to send the 49ers two second-round picks for Garoppolo in August, they could keep him for 2022, which means he most likely will — 49ers players made it clear. Given that they want Garoppolo to start as long as he is on the team. He is so popular despite his endless limitations.
Which means the 49ers now need to get rid of Garoppolo. Let's give the 49ers the benefit of the doubt and assume they know it, and are ready to get a better deal right before trading it in for Garoppolo. Because there is no point in keeping it till August.
For starters, very few teams will have enough cap space to trade for Garoppolo in August. Teams will have used most of their cap space by then on free agents and draft picks.
The 49ers would need a team with lots of cap space to lose their starting quarterback due to a freak injury in practice during training camp. Seems like a long shot. All so that they can get the second round pick.
The 49ers need cap space right now so they can go to J.C. A second round pick is irrelevant.
