Mumbai hit by massive power outage, local train services briefly disrupted

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation expressed regret for the inconvenience and cited technical issues for the power failure.

There was a massive power outage in Mumbai on Sunday, causing temporary delay in local train services. A large part of the country's commercial capital and neighboring areas were out of power following a grid failure.

Complaints of power cuts were received from South Mumbai, Chembur and Govandi. Several areas reported disruptions to local train services, the city's lifeline as well.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation said that power supply has come to a standstill in many parts of the city, adding that its team is trying to restore power. In a tweet expressing regret for the inconvenience, the civic body cited technical issues for the power failure.

It tweeted that the power supply failure was due to some technical issues. The team of the civic body is in the ground to restore power.

Local train services have been restored on all lines after a brief disruption. The Chief Public Relations Officer of Central Railway said that between 9.49 am and 9.52 am, the power supply on HB and main lines was momentarily suspended, before trains were now running on all the corridors.

Lightning was reported in the morning in parts of South Mumbai along with areas like Sion, Parel, Dadar and Matunga.

Mumbai residents took to social media to say that the outage was caused by a failure of the Tata Power Grid. Renovation work is going on in full swing. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation said in a statement that power supply would be restored in an hour.

Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport (BEST) PRO tweeted that power supply was affected in most parts of Mumbai due to tripping of MSEB 220kv transmission line on Mulund-Trombay.

The Mumbai Divisional Railway Manager said local train services on the Western Line have been disrupted due to the outage. However, Western Railway has since informed that services from Mumbai Central to Vile Parle have been restored.

Mumbai and its satellite cities are less prone to power shortages as compared to other regions of the state as the western power grid serving these regions is designed to supply efficient electricity to meet financial capital. The last such power cut across the city was witnessed in October 2020.
