Man City interest in Erling Haaland undermined as parties converge to engineer twist

Premier League champions City are in the strongest position of any English side to sign Hollande. He was the only one listed in reports of five offers from across Europe for the 21-year-old striker this week.

Haaland is said to want a guarantee of silverware, which Pep Guardiola has proven he can offer.

And his father played for the club Alf-Inge, so there are good relations with the family.

However, the same can be said for Borussia Dortmund and the respective presidents of Real Madrid, Hans-Joachim Watzke and Florentino Perez, according to AS.

The pair have had 'excellent' communication over the years, and are therefore now working together in a way that suits both of them.

Dortmund remain hopeful that Haaland will continue for another season, despite the €75m release clause. Real, meanwhile, want him, but are focused on signing Kylian Mbappe for free this summer.

The Spanish giants also feel that Karim Benzema may still play for a few more seasons. And there isn't enough room for all of them.

So, they want to put the transfer on ice and instead make a deal for next year.

In addition, Dortmund's official sponsor Puma is also keen on Haaland's stay. They are willing to pay him a €8m bonus per season.

After leaving Nike earlier this year, Adidas, Real's sponsor, is also eager to snatch him up.

So there is brand warfare going on in the background along with their signature fight.

Ultimately, Holland has to take the final decision. He's set to make it over the next few weeks.

Meanwhile, Guardiola insists City have many areas to improve and have never finished the title race as Liverpool creeps up behind them.

City lost to Tottenham last Saturday in a dramatic game that opened the title race wide. On the same day, Liverpool beat Norwich City, followed by a midweek win over Leeds, three points behind the champions.

In the first season they had a considerable lead at the top, but now that gap has narrowed. On Saturday, they try to meet Liverpool rivals Everton and get back on track.

Guardiola wants his side to focus on one thing after repeating why they didn't deserve to beat Tottenham...
