Real Madrid have won their 12th Spanish Super Cup with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Athletic Club in Saudi Arabia.
Karim Benzema took the trophy in the 52nd minute with a controversial penalty. The Frenchman's shot jumped off his standing leg and hit Yere Alvarez's hand before the referee went to the referee to confirm the penalty.
Earlier, Madrid were already cruising as Luka Modric made a beautiful strike in the first half to give Los Blancos the lead before the interval.
The Athletic were solid defensively but never created a real opportunity to score. Inaki Williams was limited in attacking opportunities and Thibaut Courtois was brilliant in goal.
The Belgian goalkeeper dashed any hopes of a comeback by saving a penalty late in the game. Eder Militao awarded a penalty as his hand deflected Raul GarcÃa's header off goal. The referee once again went to the monitor and awarded a penalty but also a red card to the Brazilian defender.
Garcia missed a penalty but the game ended and Madrid reached the final whistle.
Carlo Ancelotti's team returned to Spain with a 12th Super Cup win and a five-point lead in La Liga.
