Rafael Benitez under pressure as Everton slip to Brighton defeat in five-goal thriller

Brighton & Hove Albion scored a hard-fought 3-2 win over Everton in the Premier League on Sunday, with Alexis McAllister scoring twice and Dan Byrne securing a third to increase the pressure on Everton boss Rafa Benitez.

Brighton took an early lead at Goodison Park after midfielder Mack Allister scored in the third minute, concluding a brilliant team move with Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford being shot for the first time.

Byrne scored the second goal in the 21st minute after the centre-back, who was unmarked at the back post, nodded from a free-kick to Enock Mwepu's flick-on.

Everton were awarded a lifeline four minutes later when Anthony Gordon was fined a foul by Mwepu, but Dominic Calvert-Lewin removed the crossbar from the spot in his first appearance since August after an injury.

Gordon eventually pulled back once for the hosts in the 53rd minute, when he cut in from the right and fired a left footed shot, which took a large deflection from Brighton's Adam Lallana.

Mack Allister scored his second goal in the 71st minute with a volley from outside the penalty area. Gordon added a second goal shortly afterwards but Everton could not turn the match around with their eighth loss in their previous 12 league games.

And on the final whistle, Benitez was booed by a large section of the Goodison Park crowd as pressure mounted on the former Liverpool manager.

"Fantastic. It's been a wonderful week for us," Brighton manager Graham Potter told the BBC.

"We got the lead, we deserved it. We had to dig in and defend and then score some good goals. It's a joy for the players," he said.

"Mc Allister has had to be patient. He has to support the team from the sides. I thought it was a great performance from him."

"The way we approach the goals makes things very difficult for us," Benitez told the BBC. "Then the team missed a penalty and it became more difficult for confidence. They reacted but it's hard when you make mistakes like us."
