Finch lauds Langer for 'fantastic job'

Australian white-ball captain Aaron Finch has hailed coach Justin Langer's "super impressive" recent success, but will not engage in a public debate over the renewal of his contract.

Despite helping Australia win the Twenty20 World Cup and an Ashes series in the span of a few months, Langer's position has again been questioned before his deal expires mid-year.

Finch and Test captain Pat Cummins may be asked to provide input to Cricket Australia as it considers extending Langer's four-year term.

Accepting criticism of his sharp leadership style, Langer's more pragmatic approach coincides with a period of a prosperous form for Australia.

"He has done a fantastic job," Finch said in Friday's fixture announcement for the 2022 T20 World Cup.

"To win the World Cup when no one really gave us a chance and then to dominate the Ashes four-nil, to almost five-nil, was super impressive.

"I'm not going to comment on what Cricket Australia's process will be, but they have done an amazing job especially in the last few months.

"Whatever happens from the Cricket Australia side, it is beyond our control as players. But his contract is over, no doubt there will be some talk.

"I know Patty (Cummins) and can be approached about it ... I've never really been in a leadership role when someone got a coaching contract."

Like Finch, Cummins has repeatedly praised Langer, but fell short of an outright public support for retaining the former Test opener.

While there have reportedly been tensions in the past, Finch said Langer has now fostered a positive dressing room.

"To see how good the atmosphere went during the T20 World Cup and then the Ashes, the credit goes to everyone present there," he said.

Meanwhile, Finch said that he will continue to struggle with a persistent knee problem as Australia's domestic T20 World Cup campaign in October nears.

"It has been better, it has been worse," said the 35-year-old opener.

"Never mind. I'll go on a little longer."
