Mathis spent a lot of time in Alabama as a contributor to his defense. He is now getting ready for the NFL Draft.
As a four-star prospect from Louisiana, Mathis decided to leave the state to play for Nick Saban in Alabama. He redshirted in 2017 and was then named to the SEC All-Freshman Team in 2018 after making 18 tackles. In 2019, he recorded 0.5 tackles for losses and a total of 27 tackles. Mathis made the most of the impact in 2020 with five tackles and 1.5 sacks to make up for the loss. He helped Alabama go undefeated and win a national championship that season. Mathis elected to return to school for the 2021 season. He was an impressive player with 10.5 tackles and nine sacks to make up for the loss. His play aided Alabama to make the national championship game, but they lost to Georgia.
After five seasons with the Crimson Tide, Mathis is headed to the league. He is currently projected to be a mid-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft.
Phiderian Mathis Strength
Mathis has a fine build for an internal defensive lineman in the NFL. He's 6-foot-4 and 310 pounds, which will help him hold onto the interior. With its good shape comes good strength and length. He has 34 5/8-inch arms, which will give him an advantage over many offensive linemen playing inside.
His calling card to the next level could be his run defense. He has the ability to take down extra blockers, which frees up others to make plays on the ball. He shows the ability to take two laps. If he's blocked by just one person, he can pretend and pretend. His ability to disrupt blockers would make him an asset in the early fall.
He can be a versatile player for defence, which is becoming more and more important. Mathis has shown the ability to play as a 3-4 defensive end or a nose tackle (very limited time), but he can also be a 4-3 defensive end. His ability to play in multiple positions and catch against runs will help him become an option for more teams during the 2022 NFL Draft.
Featherian Mathis Weaknesses
Mathis isn't the greatest athlete in the class. He currently wins because of his strength and length. Mathis is not the fastest or fastest defensive lineman. Their flexibility is also not the greatest. He won't be able to steer the ball carrier into the backfield or quarterback when he scuffles too often.
His pass rush may be good, but he really relies on the quarterback to accelerate and push the pocket. This may help him see the ground, but he needs more tricks to add to his arsenal to be a better pass rush. If he can deliver more moves, he could be a three-down player in the NFL
There are times when his awareness could be better. Mathis can misread an ongoing play and leave room for running back to run. At times he does play-action passes and bites in the wrong direction. This is an area that could be cleaned up with more reps at the NFL level.
