Manchester United injury news: Cristiano Ronaldo, Edinson Cavani, Raphael Varane among the absences vs. Man City

Manchester United face city rivals Manchester City in another chapter of the Manchester derby this Sunday, with both teams needing points.

Desperate to stay in fourth place in the Premier League, players like Arsenal, West Ham and Tottenham are trailing in hopes of dropped points from the Red Devils.

Interim manager Ralph Rangnick will need more of his star players for any hope of beating their current Premier League champions at their home turf.

However, many of his senior players will be missing from the team. Here's the full rundown:

Cristiano Ronaldo

  • Injury: Hip Flexor
  • Out: March 4

Multiple reports were claiming that the Man United star would be out on the morning of the match and Rangnik confirmed that the hip flexor worked again two days before the Man City match.

Many predicted lineups slotted Ronaldo to lead the United attack, and without Cavani (Waist), Anthony Elanga and Jadon Sancho would carry out the attack.

In the last match against Watford, Ronaldo started and scored a full 90.

Edinson Cavani

  • Injury: waist
  • out of: February 8

Kavani has been out for a few weeks, first with a back injury and then stomach problems.

He returned to training and Rangnik voiced that he would be part of the team against Man City. But these plans apparently changed 24 hours before the match.

Uruguay has been absent with a groin problem and hasn't featured since playing 67 minutes away from Burnley in a 1-1 draw in early February.

Luke shaw

  • Injury: COVID-19
  • Out: March 2

Rangnik confirmed that the left back is out for the match against Manchester City after picking up COVID-19 mid-week.

The Englishman played 16 minutes off the bench against Watford last weekend.

Rafael Varane

  • Injury: COVID-19
  • Out: March 2

After scoring a full 90 last time against Watford, the Frenchman missed his 10th Premier League match of the season due to COVID-19.

He's been forced to side with a variety of issues, from groin to hamstring and abdominal complaints.

Eric bailey

  • Injury: N/A (Previous Ankle Injury)
  • Out since: February 23 (last minute December 30)

The defender hasn't played for United since returning from the African Cup of Nations, but made the bench against Atletico Madrid on 23 February after recovering from an ankle injury.

After being completely out against Watford in a 0–0 draw the last time, he returned to the squad on match day after being included in the sub list against Man City.
