Fitbit issued a product recall for nearly 1 million of its Ionic smartwatches because the device's battery could overheat and pose a burn risk for users.
According to a statement from the Consumer Product Safety Commission, Fitbit has been There were at least 115 reports in the U.S. of the lithium-ion battery used in the overhaul of the watch.
The agency said it had received 78 reports of burn injuries, including four reports of second-degree burns and two reports of third-degree burns.
In a statement emailed to USA Today, Fitbit said such incidents are "very rare" and do not affect the company's other smartwatches or fitness trackers.
"Customer safety is always Fitbit's top priority and with great caution, we are voluntarily recalling the Fitbit Ionic smartwatch," Fitbit said in a statement.
Customers can check if the wristband is attached by checking the model number on the back of the device. The following models are being recalled:
- Ionic FB503CPBU (Slate Blue/Burn Orange)
- Ionic FB503GYBK (Charcoal/Smoke Grey)
- Ionic FB503WTGY (Blue Grey/Silver Grey)
- Ionic FB503WTNV (Adidas Edition, Ink Blue and Ice Grey/Silver Grey)
The CPSC said the watches were sold online between September 2017 and December 2021 at national retailers including Best Buy, Kohl's and Target, as well as through Amazon.com and Fitbit.com.
Consumers are urged to contact Fitbit to obtain prepaid packaging to return their device for a $299 refund.
