The San Diego Padres would be without one of the sport's brightest young stars to begin the 2022 MLB season.
Team General Manager AJ. Preller said on Monday that Fernando Tatis Jr. suffered a fractured wrist during the off-season. The 23-year-old shortstop could be in remission for up to three months, and the injury could require surgery. According to MLB.com, Preller said the fracture occurred in his left scaphoid bone and could have happened early in the off-season and flared up when he recently started swinging.
Tatis battled a left shoulder injury for almost the entire 2021 season, injuring him on a swing on April 5, resulting in the first of three stops on the 10-day injured list. That didn't stop Tatis from leading the National League in homers and playing 130 games; He finished third in MVP voting, posting a .975 on-base-plus-slugging percentage and stealing 25 bases.
Prior to last season, Tatis signed a 14-year, $340 million contract with San Diego.
