Andrew Cuomo, who resigned as New York governor last year over sexual assault allegations, is a "sick, pathetic man," the state's attorney general said in a scathing rebuke on Sunday.
Cuomo spoke at a Brooklyn church, complained about the canceled culture and allegations against him, and hinted at a political comeback.
Letitia James, whose investigation was part of a three-term governor's downfall last August, when he concluded that he sexually assaulted 11 women, said: "Serial sexual assaulter Andrew Cuomo shunned the house of worship by his lies. Didn't leave either.
"Even though several independent investigations found his victims to be credible, Cuomo continued to blame everyone except himself."
The attorney general also said that New Yorkers are "ready to move on from this sick, pathetic man".
Cuomo's first public appearance since stepping down came a week after his campaign launched a digital and TV advertising campaign with the message that he had been unfairly fired from office.
In Brooklyn, Cuomo cited the Bible in describing his problems, but also attacked a "political shark" in the state capital, Albany, which he called the "smell of blood."
"The actions against me were accusatory misconduct," Cuomo said. "He used the cancellation culture to effectively reverse the election."
Cuomo resigned days after he was found to have sexually assaulted women. It was also found that he and his associates retaliated against one of the accusers.
Several district attorneys in New York have said they found Cuomo's accusers "credible," but the available evidence was not strong enough to press criminal charges.
Last month, a New York state soldier sued Cuomo, claiming he caused severe mental anguish and emotional distress by touching him inappropriately and making suggestive remarks. A Cuomo spokesperson called the suit "cheap cash extortion."
On Sunday, Cuomo said his behavior was not fair but he did not violate the law.
"I didn't appreciate how fast attitudes changed," he said. “I have learned a powerful lesson and paid a very high price for not learning that lesson. God is not finished with me yet.”
Cuomo hasn't said he's running for office, but he's still sitting on a multimillion-dollar campaign war chest that he could use to finance another run. He used his speech on Sunday to denounce the social media-fueled environment, which he described as dangerous.
"Any allegation without facts or due process can trigger condemnation," he said. “We are a country of laws, not a country of tweets. Shame on us if we let this become our new justice system."
Cuomo also said: "The Bible teaches perseverance, it teaches us to get off the mat. They broke my heart but they didn't break my spirit. I want to take the energy that could have made me bitter and make us better." .
